Instagram Keeps Refreshing Your Feed: How to Stop Losing the Post You Were Reading

instagram_feed_preview_under_300kb.jpg

TL;DR

An unexpected Instagram feed refresh can come from the app updating its content, restarting after being in the background, or losing its place during navigation. In a browser, an inactive tab may also reload when you return. These events can look similar, but they need different checks.

There is no dependable universal “never refresh my feed” switch. Turning off iPhone Background App Refresh does not freeze Instagram when you open it. Start by identifying when the jump happens, update the app, and test one change at a time. Before leaving a post that matters, save it or retain its direct link. A reference to the post is more reliable than expecting a scrolling feed to preserve your exact position.

First, protect the post still on your screen

You are halfway through a caption. A message arrives, you answer it, and Instagram returns with an entirely different set of posts. The interruption lasted seconds; the reading session is gone.

Before changing settings, protect anything you can still see. Save the publication or copy its post link somewhere you can reopen it. For a carousel, note the item number and a recognizable heading as well. Saving the post does not necessarily preserve a particular slide, expanded caption, or position in the comments.

At Dumpor, we recommend separating two goals: reducing unnecessary interruptions and making the current post easy to resume. The second is within your control even when the first depends on Instagram’s app behavior.

Avoid restarting, clearing data, or signing out while the only reference you have is the screen in front of you. Those troubleshooting steps can end the session you are trying to preserve. Keep the reference first; investigate afterward.

Is the feed refreshing, jumping, or restarting?

Watch what happens immediately before the change. Did you pull downward, tap Home again, open a notification, switch accounts, or return after the phone was locked? A repeatable trigger is more useful than a general impression that the app refreshes constantly.

What happens What to investigate first Useful comparison
The feed jumps while you are actively reading Navigation gestures, app behavior, or a bug Read without switching screens or touching navigation
Your place disappears after switching apps Session restoration or an app restart Return through the app switcher after a short interval
The app shows a launch screen before loading Home A fresh launch rather than a simple resume Compare with returning without closing the app
A desktop tab reloads after being unused Browser memory-saving behavior Test a site exception for inactive-tab unloading
A spinner or connection error appears repeatedly Connectivity or a service problem Compare two stable connections
Only one account behaves this way Account-specific state or behavior Compare another account you already use on the same device

Also distinguish this problem from “Couldn’t refresh feed.” That message describes a failure to load content. Here, the main concern is losing your reading position when the feed changes or the session is rebuilt.

Why Instagram may lose your place after switching apps

Moving an app into the background is different from keeping it continuously active. A phone manages resources across everything you are doing, and a screen visible in the app switcher does not guarantee that the app remains fully running behind it.

Android’s documentation explains that the system can end cached app processes when resources are needed elsewhere. When the user returns, the app must recreate its interface and restore whatever state it retained. That general mechanism makes a restart one plausible explanation for lost position; it does not establish that every Instagram feed jump is a memory problem.

Does turning off Background App Refresh stop Instagram refreshing?

Not reliably. On iPhone, Background App Refresh concerns an app checking for new content while it is not actively in use. It is not a command to preserve Instagram’s scroll position, prevent a fresh launch, or stop network requests after you reopen the app.

You can inspect the setting under Settings → General → Background App Refresh and, where available, turn it off for Instagram. Treat this as a limited test of background activity. Repeat the same app-switching sequence and observe whether it makes a difference.

If Instagram still reloads on return, that does not prove the setting failed. The update may be happening in the foreground, or the previous app state may no longer be available.

A practical sequence for reducing unexpected refreshes

1. Identify one repeatable trigger

Choose a post you do not mind losing, then reproduce the sequence once or twice. For example, open the caption, switch to a notes app for thirty seconds, and return through the app switcher.

Keep the account, connection, and return method consistent. If one test involves tapping a notification and the next involves opening Instagram from its icon, you have changed more than the waiting time.

2. Update Instagram and restart once

Install the current Instagram update from your device’s official app store. After preserving any work, restart the phone and repeat your test. Check for an operating-system update if the problem persists, especially when other apps are also unstable.

A restart is a troubleshooting step, not a way to preserve the current feed. Expect the next opening to load the app again. What matters is whether later reading sessions behave more consistently.

3. Stop closing the app between reading sessions

Switch away normally instead of repeatedly swiping Instagram out of the app switcher or using Force stop. Deliberately ending the app works against the goal of resuming its current screen.

Closing and reopening can help when an app is frozen or unresponsive. It should not become a routine “keep my place” technique. The next launch may require Instagram to rebuild the feed.

Return through the app switcher during testing. Opening a notification or a shared link may take you to another destination, which makes it harder to judge whether your original reading position was preserved.

4. Check for accidental navigation

Notice whether the jump follows a downward pull near the top of the feed or a repeated tap on Home. Depending on the interface, a navigation action may move you to the top or request newer content.

On iPhone, also consider whether you touched the status-bar area, which can scroll supported views to the top. A jump caused by navigation can feel like an automatic refresh even when the visible posts have not all changed.

5. Compare stable network conditions

If refreshing comes with spinners, blank areas, or errors, test on a stable Wi-Fi connection and then on cellular data, where available. Stay on one connection during each test rather than repeatedly switching while reading.

A connection change can coincide with new requests or retries. That makes it worth investigating, but it does not mean poor Wi-Fi is the cause of every jump to the top.

Android: cache and battery settings need different treatment

If the app remains unstable, clearing its cache is a reasonable targeted step. The usual route is Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage & cache → Clear cache, although manufacturers use different labels.

Read the button carefully. Clear cache removes temporary data; Clear storage or Clear data is a broader reset of local app data. These actions are not interchangeable. Cache clearing also does not recover a feed position or prevent Instagram from requesting new content later.

Check battery settings only when the problem mainly follows backgrounding. If Instagram has explicitly been placed in a restricted or deep-sleep category, test the phone’s normal default setting. Manufacturer-specific restrictions can affect background behavior, but changing them is not proof that the app will retain its screen.

iPhone: use a cautious approach to resets

An iPhone does not provide the same universal per-app Clear cache button found in many Android settings menus. Instructions that tell every iPhone user to follow that Android route are not applicable.

Start with an app update, one device restart, and a repeatable test. If you compare Background App Refresh settings, remember their limited scope. Neither setting promises to keep Instagram’s current screen in memory indefinitely.

Reinstalling is a later option for persistent app faults, not the first response to an occasional feed update. Before deleting the app, preserve anything stored only locally, including drafts you need, and confirm that you can sign back in with the required verification method.

Instagram in a browser: check whether the tab was unloaded

A browser can discard an inactive page to reduce memory use, then reload it when you return. Instagram may therefore lose your place even though you never pressed Reload.

In desktop Chrome, open Settings → Performance and inspect Memory Saver. To keep Instagram active without turning the feature off everywhere, use Always keep these sites active and add the relevant Instagram site. Menu wording can change with browser versions.

This exception targets Chrome’s tab deactivation. It does not stop Instagram’s own page updates, prevent a browser crash, or guarantee that every position within the page will be restored.

For reading a specific publication, open its direct post address in a separate tab when practical. Even if that tab reloads, its address still identifies the publication rather than the changing Home feed. It may not preserve the exact comment, caption expansion, or carousel item.

Protect the reading session without freezing the whole feed

The smallest useful habit is to retain a reference before an interruption. Save the post before checking a message, or keep its direct link in a note. This is prevention while the content is visible, not a search strategy for something already lost.

For a long caption, note the paragraph or heading you reached. For a carousel, record the item number and a brief description. For a comment thread, preserve enough context to recognize the relevant discussion if replies are displayed differently later.

What you want to preserve Useful action before leaving What it cannot guarantee
Access to the current post Save it or retain its direct link Continued availability if the source is removed
Your place in a carousel Note the slide number and heading Automatic reopening on that item
The caption passage you are reading Note its heading or a few identifying words Preservation of the expanded text state
A browser reading tab Check tab-sleep settings and retain the post URL Prevention of every website update
An unfinished draft Preserve an available copy before resetting the app Recovery after local data is deleted

Keeping a post reference also helps you distinguish refresh from removal. If the feed changes but the direct link still works, the publication remains available. If the source itself cannot be opened, our guide to Instagram content that is not available addresses that different problem.

Know when local troubleshooting has reached its limit

If the behavior is repeatable after basic checks, report it through Instagram’s Help → Report a problem option, where available in the profile settings. Menu placement may differ by version.

Describe the trigger, device model, operating-system and app versions, connection type, and whether the problem affects one account or several. “The feed returns to the top after I lock the screen for twenty seconds” is more actionable than “Instagram is broken.”

Do not assume a server outage, account restriction, or deliberate experiment from a feed jump alone. Those explanations need additional evidence. Once the basic checks are complete, repeating destructive resets is unlikely to provide a clearer diagnosis.

Where Dumpor fits

For a focused look at an available public account, the Dumpor Instagram viewer offers a separate browsing route. This can be useful when your task is to inspect a particular public source rather than continue a personalized Home feed.

Dumpor cannot lock Instagram’s scroll position, restore an app session, or stop the operating system from restarting an application. Keep useful source references whichever viewing route you choose.

If a page refreshes unexpectedly specifically on our website, contact Dumpor support with the public page address, browser, device, and steps that reproduce the issue. We can investigate behavior on our service; Instagram app problems should be reported through Instagram’s own support tools.

FAQ

Can I permanently turn off Instagram feed auto-refresh?

Why does Instagram refresh after I switch to another app?+

Instagram may update when it becomes active again, or it may need to recreate a screen after its process was ended. Returning through a notification can also change the destination. Compare the same short app-switching sequence and watch for a launch screen. These clues narrow the cause without proving exactly what happened internally.

Why does it still refresh with Background App Refresh turned off?+

That iPhone setting controls background content checks. It does not prevent foreground updates after you reopen Instagram, and it does not guarantee that the app’s previous interface remains available. Continued refreshing therefore does not necessarily mean the toggle is broken. Investigate the return path and whether the app is restarting.

Will clearing Instagram’s cache keep my place?+

No. Clearing cache can help investigate temporary-data problems, but it does not preserve your current reading position or disable future feed updates. On Android, distinguish Clear cache from Clear storage or Clear data. Save the relevant post before troubleshooting, and avoid a broader local-data reset unless you are prepared for its consequences.

Does using Following or Favorites stop feed refreshes?+

Those views concern which accounts’ posts you read and how the feed is organized. They should not be treated as controls for app lifecycle, session restoration, or browser tab unloading. Use them for a more deliberate reading list, but still keep a reference to any individual post you need to resume.

Is airplane mode a reliable way to freeze Instagram?+

It can interrupt network access while enabled, but it is not a reliable reading-session control. Media or captions that were not loaded may remain unavailable, and reconnecting allows requests to resume. It also does not prevent every local navigation change or app restart. Preserve the post reference instead of depending on temporary disconnection.

Why does Instagram reload only in my desktop browser?+

Check the browser’s inactive-tab and memory-saving settings, particularly if the problem follows time spent in another tab. Chrome documents that inactive tabs can reload when revisited. A site exception can address that behavior, but an active page refreshing repeatedly needs a separate check for website issues or extension interference.

Will reinstalling Instagram stop the problem for good?+

Reinstalling may resolve a persistent local app fault, but it cannot guarantee that the feed will never update or lose its position again. It can also remove local data, including drafts. Use it after simpler checks, preserve work first, and make sure your login and verification methods are available.
