Instagram Restyle AI edits photos and videos inside the Stories composer. For photos, tap the paintbrush-style Restyle icon and use Add, Remove, Change, or a preset. For videos, Meta’s documented workflow centers on preset effects, not the same open-ended photo controls. Review the result, tap Done, and choose your Story audience. New effects arrived in 2026, but availability varies. Restyle cannot unlock private Stories, guarantee factual accuracy, or replace privacy settings.
A plain paper cup against a city backdrop becomes a watercolor scene, complete with imaginary snow. That’s not just color correction; Instagram generated new visual information. At Dumpor, we explain how to make those creative alterations without mistaking them for documentary photographs.
Restyle brings Meta AI image transformation into Instagram’s Story editor. Its direct Story integration launched in October 2025. Instead of editing through a separate chatbot, users can describe visual changes beside familiar Story tools.
Generative editing constructs new pixels. Unlike a conventional brightness adjustment, it can reconstruct missing backgrounds or unintentionally change details you intended to keep.
| Tool | What it can do | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Add | Insert props or decorations into photos | Generated objects weren’t photographed |
| Remove | Erase objects and rebuild the surrounding area | Reconstructed details can be inaccurate |
| Change | Alter colors, backgrounds, clothing, or style | Faces and product details may drift |
| Photo presets | Apply watercolor, cinematic, or outfit looks | The selection changes |
| Video presets | Add supported effects such as snow or flames | Photo prompt controls may not apply |
| Ordinary Story tools | Crop, add text, stickers, and overlays | Different from generated scene edits |
Restyle in Stories is not identical to Meta AI chat, the Edits video application, or Facebook’s editing menus, even when the products share technology.
For instance: Remove the cardboard box behind the chair; preserve the chair and floor. This is better direction than “Clean it up,” but still no guarantee. Keep an untouched original in your own library.
Restyle supports playful additions, changes to hair or clothing, lighting, backgrounds, and visual styles. Good prompts say what changes, where it changes, and what should remain recognizable. These are example requests, not guaranteed outputs.
| Goal | Example prompt | Inspect afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Add decoration | Add three gold balloons behind the chair; don't cover the person. | Hair and shadows |
| Remove clutter | Remove the cable at bottom right; preserve the rug texture. | Floor details |
| Change scenery | Replace the background with a misty garden at dawn. | The subject’s outline |
| Stylize | Make this a muted watercolor with a soft paper texture. | Faces and text |
| Alter light | Add warm sunset light without rearranging the room. | Product colors |
Avoid conflicting instructions. A request to change everything while keeping everything identical is a dead end. Choose the editing mode closest to your goal: Add inserts, Remove reconstructs, and Change reimagines. For commercial photos, verify packaging and logos against the actual product; AI may alter them even when told not to.
Instagram’s documented video workflow is straightforward: select a short video in the Story composer, tap Restyle, choose a preset, preview the generated version, then tap Done. Examples have included snow, flames, and underwater scenery. Do not assume every account can use photo-style free-text editing to remove a moving object from an entire clip.
Watch the whole result, not just its first frame. Motion can reveal flickering textures or distorted subjects. If it obscures speech or action, a conventional adjustment may be better. Review captions for readability before publishing.
Meta added prompt-based Story editing in October 2025. In July 2026, it announced more than 30 additional AI-powered Story effects connected with Muse Image, initially in selected countries. That does not mean identical tools arrived on every account simultaneously. An effect shown in Edits, Facebook, or a limited seasonal campaign may also be missing from Instagram’s Story editor. Follow the controls actually offered on your device.
A standard filter changes appearance; a sticker sits over the image; Restyle generates changes within the scene. A chatbot may also produce AI images, but it is not required for this Story workflow. For faithful records or precise product information, use a conventional editor. For clearly imaginative scenes, Restyle may be quicker.
Add the Add Yours sticker to a Restyled Story to invite eligible viewers to apply a similar creative treatment to their own images. A bookstore might invite followers to put their reading nook on the moon. Participants publish their own Stories; you cannot pre-approve their responses or claim unlimited reuse rights.
For a campaign framework and permission safeguards, see our guide to running an Instagram Add Yours Story campaign.
A fantastical backdrop signals playfulness. A generated product defect, changed protest sign, or invented person at a real event can mislead viewers. Do not present an AI alteration as documentary evidence. Meta has AI transparency measures, but do not assume every effect receives an identical visible label. When the change affects meaning, say so: “AI-restyled background” is simple and clear.
Restyle also processes the media you submit under Meta’s applicable AI terms and privacy practices. Avoid confidential documents, private client images, intimate media, and identifiable children’s photographs. Obtain appropriate consent from people depicted. A Close Friends audience controls subsequent viewing, not the earlier AI processing.
Keep the untouched original for records, reporting, or disputes. Erasing an object from an image does not erase the real-world event.
Before tapping Share, inspect the image at phone-screen size. Small preview cards can conceal misspelled signs, irregular edges, and poorly placed stickers. For a brand account, compare the altered Story with the original and confirm that no price, product feature, or identifiable person has been invented. Use a normal text overlay for essential information and add captions when audio matters. A compelling effect should support the message, not compete with it.
A professional account, unrelated subscription, or unofficial app is not a guaranteed unlock. If the generation contains double fingers, bent shelves, or scrambled lettering, try another version or use the original.
A café could photograph an empty table for a reading-night announcement, then test a warm-light Restyle and a more playful version with illustrated stars. Keep dates, prices, names, and venue details in regular Story text, not AI-generated lettering. Check visual contrast, accurate product appearance, audience selection, and reply permissions before publishing.
For public creative research, Dumpor’s Instagram Story Viewer displays available public Stories in a browser without Instagram login. It cannot edit content, open private accounts, or reveal a creator’s prompts. Our Instagram Highlights Viewer similarly lets you browse accessible public Highlight collections, not generate effects.

FAQ
Instagram Restyle AI is a generative editing option built into the Stories composer. It lets users alter photographs with written requests such as Add, Remove, and Change, or apply ready-made visual treatments. Video Stories support available preset effects. Meta expanded the range of AI-powered Story effects in 2026, though rollout and menus vary. Restyle changes content before publication; it is not an automatic enhancement applied to everything you view.
Open the mobile app, create a Story, and select a photo or video. Tap the paintbrush-style Restyle icon in the top editing tray; some interfaces use an AI Edit label. For photos, choose a mode or preset and describe the desired change. For videos, select an available preset. Review the generation, tap Done, then share with your chosen audience. If the button is missing, update the app and remember that feature availability can differ by account and region.
It can attempt to remove an unwanted element from a photo and generate a plausible replacement for the area behind it. Select Remove and describe the object and its position. Examine the result carefully: missing objects can leave strange shadows, repeated textures, or distorted nearby details. Do not use a cleaned version as proof of what a scene originally contained. For records and disputes, preserve the unchanged original separately.
The documented Instagram Story video workflow primarily offers preset effects. Photo editing more explicitly supports typed Add, Remove, and Change requests. Some Meta products and future app versions may provide different controls, so inspect the available video interface rather than assuming it matches photos. Choose a supported effect, preview the complete clip, and watch for motion artifacts or changes that make the original action misleading.
Restyle was introduced as an in-app creative feature without a separate paid Restyle subscription requirement. It should not be confused with Instagram Plus, which provides different subscription benefits. Availability, limits, and offerings may change by market or account. Use the official Instagram app to see what is offered, and do not purchase an unrelated membership on the assumption that it unlocks a missing effect.
Instagram supports an Add Yours workflow associated with Restyle, allowing eligible viewers to create their own versions of an editing idea. Add the sticker to the Restyled Story before publishing. Participants use their own images, not your original photograph, and their normal account visibility rules apply. If you’re organizing a branded campaign, explain the prompt clearly and obtain appropriate permission before republishing participants’ content outside the original interaction.
Meta uses AI-related transparency measures, but it is unwise to rely on one predictable label appearing for every kind of edit. Some modifications look unmistakably imaginative; others can be photorealistic. When an AI-generated change might affect how viewers interpret a product, place, person, or event, disclose it plainly in your own Story text. Keep the original for verification and avoid presenting generated details as documented facts.
Treat Restyle as an AI processing service, not a private, offline photo filter. The media and instructions you provide are subject to Meta’s applicable terms and data practices. Get appropriate consent for identifiable people, and avoid confidential documents, sensitive personal images, or proprietary material you are not authorized to process. Choosing a Close Friends audience later affects publication visibility; it does not undo the earlier submission to an AI editing service.
Meta releases tools and presets progressively, and some effects are limited by region, app version, account, or season. The 2026 Muse Image announcements described expanded Story effects beginning in selected markets, not simultaneous universal access. Update Instagram, compare photo and video menus, and look for an effect browser where offered. If a feature remains absent, do not assume your account is penalized or that a third-party download can legitimately activate it.
Editing a Story creates content for that publishing workflow; it should not be treated as a dependable way to modify or preserve the camera original. Keep an untouched source file and, if you save a generated version, give it a distinct name or location. Check which version you are attaching to a future post. That separation is particularly important when you need genuine before-and-after documentation rather than a decorative image.
